Principals
And Ideas

Some people choose names which principles they aspire and hope to. A person may name himself Mao Ze Gao( Successful and High), as an additional name to their given name. All parents hope that their children would become worthy persons. Therefore, when they give names to their children, they express this hope in their names, however in some cases, parents neglected the importance of such names and end up giving their child a commonplace name without any fixed meaning or purposes, such names will not work well with the child and may deterred his or her learning.

However some regarded dreams as good omens, especially when there is a pregnant woman in the family. It is often believed than the dream is associated with the baby's future. Li Bai was named because his mother saw the planet Venus(tai bai) in a dream. Yue Fei was named Fei (fly) because his mother dreamed of a giant bird alighting on her roof and also partly to express her wish for him to excel.

Names are also sometimes given to describe the physical features of the person. History provides us with many such instances. According to Records of the Historian(Shi Ji) Confucius was named Qui (mound) because he was born with a mound-like head. The noted painted and seal carver, Wu Changsuo turned deaf in his later years. He therefore called himself Wu Dalong(the the deaf) and carved a seal in that name.
