Meaning
of Chinese Name

The Chinese believe that every person must have a personal and private name. For example, it is known that Sun Wen was the public name of Sun Yat-sen. Personal names can have up to six meanings: linguistic, symbolic, ideological, practical, social and historical.

Each word chosen as a personal name have a special background. For example : Lu Xun, the great Chinese modern writer, who adopted his mother's surname to express his love for her. A word is equivalent to a person's representation when it becomes a name. It represent his reputation ,his life and his memories.

The Chinese are superstitious people who believed that a person's soul can leave him if the person is badly frightened, his or her relative would call out his name to summon his soul or write his name on a piece of paper and pray in the temple for the deities to protect him.

The Chinese often give names to commemorate a special event,such as a woman who was born on a full moon may be called Ming Yue(bright moon) to commemorate the event.
