And Differences
Gender
People usually can tell a person's sex from his or her
name. This is because there is a tradition of using
different words in men's and women's names. Words in
men's names often show masculine characteristics while
words used in women's can be grouped in the following
eight categories:
1.
words for female persons
2. words describing women's appearance
3. words concerning women's virtue
4. words for women's objects

5.
names of birds
6. words describing beauty
7. names of precious objects
8. words about nature |
Seniority
A person's name sometimes indicate his relationship
with other members of the family or clan, such as grandparents,
parents, spouse, siblings, uncles, aunts and cousins
Sometimes people use their mother's family name instead
of their father's surname, however this is very very
rare. One special example is The Kong clan of Confucius,
which has kept an unbroken genealogical tree or Confucius's
direct descendants for 77 generations. For families
using one-character given names, seniority or relationship
is sometimes indicated by radicals of the characters.
Seniority among brothers and sisters is sometimes indicated
by a character in their given names. Some given names
indicate seniority simply by including an ordinal number.
There are five types of given names which indicate seniority:
1. Among brothers or sisters in separate orders
2. Among both Brothers and sisters in the same order
3. Among cousins of the same sex
4. Among cousins of both sexes
5. Among sworn friends or members of a society
