This is a name given to a child when he is born, to be used among family and close relatives. It is known as his milk name, infant name or childhood name and is usually used from birth to school age. This however is not the normal trend now, as people usually use their infant name throughout their whole life.

An infant name is also called a soul-wishing name in the hope that the baby will have a sucessful life in front of him. This idea ,though,may sometimes backfire as there are some cases where people have to change their names, because such names given to them by the parents, clashes with their fate and may hinder him or her in their life sucess. Such people usually consult professional fortune tellers or their parents on alternative names, which will improve or at least does not affect their lives.

Infant names are less elegant than formal names as they take the names of famous people, animals or environmetal objects. Confucius son was given the infant name Li as somebody gave him a carp when the child was born, while others may give a name such as Dog to their child as the first thing the child saw when he or she was born was a dog.
