Mitosis

Mitosis lasts about 1 hour.

  • Prophase – nuclear envelope breaks down; the internal cell organization is replaced by the spindle; chromatin becomes densely packed and chromosomes appear

  • Metaphase – chromosomes arrange equatorially; the fibers of the spindle attach to the centomeres

  • Anaphase – chromosomes are moved to the different poles by shortening the fibres

  • Telophase – nuclear envelope is reassembled; chromosomes unravel (became chromatin again)

  • Cytokinesis – division of cytoplasm, two cells separate

Mechanism of mitosis explain the invariability of genetic information among all cells in one organism.
imagine this is the Earth: chromosomes arrange on the equator
and then are pulled to the poles
