| Mao Zedong was a Communist leader who, on
October 1, 1949 declared China to be The People's
Republic of China. Although he used weapons to take over,
he won people with his doctrine. Mao believed that
everyone should be totally equal and that no person
should have more money than another. Poor people believed
that if they joined Mao's crusade, they would have better
opportunities in life. In 1953, Mao established "collectives".
Collectives are farms on which the land and machinery are
pooled, people work together as a group and share the
harvest. All land and possesions belonged to the
government. He was hailed in China as a national hero. Mao is known for his revolutions or attempts to improve China, they all failed. The worst of these failures was the Cultural Revolution when he unleashed the Red Guard. The Red Guard enforced the anti-"Four Olds" laws. The Four Olds were old thought, old ideology, old habits, and old customs. Red Guards were high school age. |
