| Bill Gates conquers with
technology. His saga started on October 25, 1955 when he
was born into his Seattle family. He grew up with his two
sisters, their father, William H. Gates the II, and their
late mother, Mary Gates. His father was an attorney and
his mother was a school teacher, University of Washington
Regent, and Chairwoman of United Way International. Bill Gates began programming computers at age 13. In 1973 he entered Harvard University as a freshman. In his junior year, Gates dropped out of Harvard to devote his energy to Microsoft, a company he had begun in 1975. At that time, Microsoft was a fledgling corporation, but it would soon become the behemoth it is known as today. In 1980 IBM asked Microsoft to provide it with an operating system for its future microcomputer, the P.C. He adapted the SCP-DOS, and renamed it MS-DOS. Today, this is the most widely used operating system. It is used by all IBM computers. In addition to this, Bill Gates created Windows in November, 1985, making more updated versions in both 1990 and 1992. The Microsoft operating system is used to run between 80 - 90% of the world's personal computers. Microsoft is aggressively seeking to shape the future of personal computing, Internet publishing, and electronic commerce. It is also trying to position itself to own the software used by consumers to operate cable television systems. Microsoft has been declared a monopoly. It has been accused of dominating human speech and communication. Senator Robert G. Toricelli called Microsoft "a great American corporation and a tremendous national asset". However, Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson ruled that Microsoft "trammeled on the competitive process". He claims that Bill Gate's tactics are "effectively guaranteeing it's continued dominance in the relevant market". In a very unique way, Bill Gates has conquered competition worldwide. He has become the world's richest man and caused the whole world to rely on Microsoft for their technological communication. |
