It is the spirit or soul of a dead person which is believed to be able to manifest itself to the living.
European traditional beliefs in ghosts and haunted houses go back to ancient times. There have been a great decrease in such beliefs from the Middle Age to the Renaissance. However, belief in ghosts and related superstitions were stimulated by the growth of spiritualism and psychical research during the 19th century.
