Belief in ghosts is very common in all societies and in all parts of the world. There are mainly two types of beliefs: One is the bad and harmful ghost who comes to take revenge and the other is the good soul of beloved persons who comes to help. In the first case, it is the ghost who generally is believed to initiate the contact, and in the second it is the living person who does so.

Where ghosts are feared, the places they are suspected to haunt become taboo. The Navajo Indians traditionally avoid the site of a death.

In situations where ancestors are believed to be active in the lives of their descendants, as among the Zulu peoples of South Africa, people may seek contact with the dead through a medium.

Traditionally in Europe, ghosts manifesting themselves spontaneously are usually thought to be phantoms of persons who died as sinners or perhaps others whose wrongful deaths have remained unavenged.
