Height Formula
Using trig functions, we can calculate the height of an object. Pace distance from the base of the object to a point some distance away. Record this distance. Then, using a sextant, measure the angle to the top of the object.

The method shown above only works if you can measure L. In many cases, you cannot walk directly to the base of the object. A more complicated formula allows you to get around that problem. You must make two different angle measurements, seperated by a known distance, L.
