{ Interview: Adam Rosenthal, "Coaster Kid" }

MIT senior Adam Rosenthal was involved in the creation of an elaborate roller coaster design using Legos. The construction project was part of a classroom team work opportunity.

Q. What are some of the science principals you are exploring?
A. Principals: electricity and magnetism, laws of motion.

Q. Do you think this is a good way to learn skills such as cooperation and critical thinking, as well as the science problems that are involved? Why or why not?
A. Definitely. Meeting the deadline was all about cooperation with my teammate and critical thinking to overcome the problems that cropped up.

Q. What were some of the major challenges that you encountered
as you built?
A. Tolerancing, time constraints, lack of parts/materials, and coordination with a teammate.

Q. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
A. It was a worthwhile experience. It taught me a lot about the politics of industry-type goals and deadlines, and how to design and build a product from scratch.
