Africa: Human Evolution
Early Man
Archaic or early Homo sapiens (thinking man), which
emerged 400,000 million years ago, were the next stage of human
development. Their brains were larger and became more refined: from
hand-axes to blades. Early
Homo sapiens eventually evolved to modern man. And at
this time scientists discover evidence of nomadic societies. Bands
of eight to twenty-five people would travel, making temporary
settlements.
But Africa is not simply the probable cradle of humanity,
it is the cradle of civilization. As you have learned, Eastern
Africa was the site for the birth of humanity; several regions of
Africa made great contributions to the development of agriculture;
and northern Africa initiated great civilizations such as Egypt.
