Introducing Africa...
|
The savannas of
east Africa have more animals than any other
grassland area. Rainfall in grasslands is
seasonal, and the animals sometimes travel
great distances to find grass. Many different
savanna animals will gather at rivers and
other bodies of water to drink. Plant-eating
animals of the savannas migrate by the
thousands through the grasslands feeding on
the grass while meat-eating mammals--such as
cheetahs, hyenas, and lions--roam the
savannas in search of prey. Since the rich
soils of grasslands are ideal for farming,
people have converted many such areas to
farmland. Because of this fact, many
grassland animals have become endangered due
to the loss of their habitat. People have
also overhunted numerous grassland
animals.
