Activities

Here are some activities your students can do:

1) Send your student's names to Mars along with the Mars 2001 Lander.  To do this visit this site: http://spacekids.hq.nasa.gov/2001

2) Read and analyze the Kennedy speech on the goal to put a man on the moon before the Soviets. Then talk about the race for space and the Red Scare. Visit this web page to get the entire text. http://www.cs.umb.edu/jfklibrary/j052561.htm

3) Help gather data for the GLOBE program, so we can learn more about the environment!  http://www.globe.gov/

4) Make a model of the solar system, almost to scale. Use wire hangers and make a mobile solar system model. Or make a model of the solar system using people, space them out according to a scale like 1 meter = 10^6 km, you may need a football field.

5) Sing-a-long!  Sing the song, The Family of the Sun, to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell!  (note: taken from the National Air and Space exhibit.)

The Family of the Sun,
The Family of the Sun,
There are nine planets in
the Family of the Sun.

Mercury is hot
and Mercury is small.
Mercury has no atmosphere;
It's just a rock ball.

Chorus:
The Family of the Sun,
The Family of the Sun,
Here's another planet in
The Family of the Sun.

Venus has thick clouds
That hide what is below.
The air is foul, the ground is hot.
It rotates very "slow."

Chorus

We love the Earth, our home,
Its oceans and its trees.
We eat its food; we breathe its air,
So no pollution, please.

Chorus

Mars is very red.
It's also dry and cold.
Some day you might visit Mars
If you are really bold.

Great Jupiter is big.
We've studied it a lot.
We found that is has 16 moons
and a big red spot.

Chorus

Saturn has great rings.
We wondered what they were,
Now we know they're blocks of ice
which we saw as a blur.

With atmospheres that swirl
& wispy white clouds too
Uranus and Neptune
are so cold that you'd turn blue.

Chorus

Pluto's last in line.
It's farthest from the Sun.*
It's small and cold and icy too.
To land there won't be fun.

The family of the Sun,
The family of the Sun,
There are nine planets in
The family of the Sun.
