Nicola, aka Nicki, 17, Hong Kong

My parents are German but I have been living in Hong Kong all of my life. I learned about the ThinkQuest Internet competition over two years ago from our coach Cathy and have participated in it every year since then. It has been a great and invaluable experience for me, because it has taught me a lot about many different topics and I have gained new friends.

I enjoy playing numerous sports, surfing the internet, travelling, movies, animals and the outdoors.

I was very interested in creating a site on the important topic of world hunger as I have traveled to some of the countries we have written about and seen these people suffering. I know that every little helps and hopefully we can make some more people aware of what is going on in our world.

Michael, aka Mike, 14, USA

I learned about ThinkQuest just this year from my science teacher, Doug, who had participated previously. My participation has enabled me to use my internet and programming skills to further my and hopefully others' knowledge and interest in a very important matter while getting to interact with individuals from all across the globe. All of the group members have worked hard and utilized our individual talents to develop this group project which we hope will spark your interest in the topic of world hunger.

Activities I enjoy include computer programming since the age of six, baseball, tennis, sailing, and playing the keyboard from time to time. I've enjoyed designing websites for myself and for others, and have learned to use Linux as well as several programming languages.

When the topic of world hunger was presented to me, I was amazed by just how little public awareness there was about the issue. I, like most other people, used to think of famines when the word 'hunger' was said. I hope that all of our visitors leave not only realizing that this problem exists in the day-to-day lives of hundreds of millions of people, but that it is indeed solvable, within our lifetimes.

Lyndon, 17, UK

I found about the ThinkQuest competition last year when I was invited to join a team entering last year's competition, and enjoyed it so much that I decided that I must enter again this year. The ThinkQuest competition provides a fantastic opportunity for students to meet others and work together to produce the best possible site using each of our skills and qualities. The result of our teamwork is this site, and I hope you throughly enjoy it and come back for another vist!

One of my main intests is obviously the Internet, enjoying designing and programming sites as well as using it for research purposes. However, I am also involved with a lot of activites besides the Internet. I enjoy supporting, helping out and running various parts of charitable events, and have raised a large amount of money for many causes as a result. I am also a reading mentor for a younger student at my school, helping not only to develop his reading skills, but also his confidence and enjoyment of school life in general. In addition to this, I also have various responsibilities in many areas of my school such as being in charge of the prefect system.

I didn't know much about the problem of world hunger before starting work on this site, but have been amazed at the extent of the problem. The aim of this site was to give information about the causes and solutions to the problem, and what can happen if nothing is done about it, in an attempt to help inform others so that they may realize that the problem is occurring and that they can help to solve it. There are many thousands of lives being lost every day due to hunger and this is something that must come to an end.

Cathy, USA

I am a learning support teacher at a high school in Pennsylvania. I have also been interested in technology in education for many years and first heard about ThinkQuest in 1997. I have coached three teams since then and have really enjoyed working with the students and learning a lot about technology in the meantime. In 1998 I had the honor of going to finals in Los Angeles where I met Nicki for the first time. She was on my first team "The Global Gazette" (/18802). There she met a boy from Australia that somehow put her in touch with Lyndon in England. They worked on an honorable mention site called "Scuba Diving: In Depth" (/25729). On the airplane on the way to LA, I met Doug and we created a TQ teacher site called CARES, which focuses on service learning. (/50017). Since then we have become good friends and Doug has shared his interest in The Hunger Project with me. That's where the idea for a site on world hunger was formed. Doug then asked one of his students, Mike, to join the team with Lyndon and Nicki.

It has been a great pleasure for me to work with these exceptional students. Not only are they interested in creating a great website, but they are truly interested in finding a solution to world hunger. They spent many hours discussing the problem and trying to figure out the best way to present it to others.

Besides working with students on the above sites and teaching, I utilized the CARES site this summer as an inservice online course for teachers. This was a new experience for me and something that I want to continue to pursue in the future. I am also married and have three children which keeps me very busy.

Hans, Greece

After completing my bachelor of law studies in the United Kingdom I specialized in the field of International Trade Law, especially WTO law and obtained my Masters degree at the Europa Institute in The Netherlands. Even though this is my first active participation in a ThinkQuest event I have known about ThinkQuest for a couple of years, ever since my sister Nicki introduced me to it.

One of the most fascinating aspect of creating a ThinkQuest website is the combination and amlagamation of a variety of very different disciplines. Research, writing, technical and computer literacy, as well as good presentation skills must all be combined within one site created by only three students.

I feel that this years entry has been a particularly rewarding experience for all due to the nature its content. It is indeed a sad realization that there should be people starving in a world of technology, computers and the internet. But in this disparity lies a wealth of opportunities, hopefully our entry represents some of these.

Douglas, USA

Douglas has taught for 31 years, the last twenty teaching middle school science at Friends' Central School. He is on the Pennsylvania State Board for Service Learning and serves as an adjunct professor in the Drexel University School of Education. Doug collaborated last year with Cathy to create a Thinkquest website that has been used for teacher training in Service Learning. He has been active in hunger issues, visiting Africa in 1994 for The Hunger Project. He is commited to the sustainable end of hunger in harmony with the environment. He sees the internet as a critical tool in facilitating the mind shift and education necessary to achieve this commitment.
