Fire-fly
Glow-worms or fire-flies are family of the Lampyridae, the beetles, and are very special because they transmit light. Fire-flies are often living in subtropical areas. Fire-flies have a length of 16 - 18 mm. Their shape is long, small and flat and their colors can vary from yellow to black. Their food consists of little snails.
The lighttransmitting organs are in the back of their body. Normally the females are transmitting more light as the males. The light is being generated, because there take place reactions between different matters, which are produced by the fire-fly. All this takes place in the lighttransmitting organs, which are build up of different celllayers. This reacton is a sort of oxydation. Fire-flies are transmitting light to connect with the other race.
Lanternfish
The lanternfish lives in dark water, hundreds of meters beyond the oceansurface.
The maximum length of a lanternfish is 15 cm. There are more of 250 different species than the lanternfish.
Lanternfish are able to watch their enemies with their large eyes, while eating little floating plants and animals.
Scientifics do not know why lanternfishes have lighttransmitting organs on each side.
Probably this is for the Lanterfish to recognize each other or to help them find food. It is also assumed that they are transmitting light to confuse their enemies.
