The Site: Enlightened

"Enlightened" is the result of a international collaboration between high-school students as part of the ThinkQuest-project. It is a student-created educational internet resource promoting the understanding of the behavior and the properties of light, but contains also lots of information about the spectrum and about light in nature. The site allows users to explore the topic of light with almost every piece of interactivity afforded by the internet.

You can enter our site after watching a Flash-intro, but it is also possible to enter directly by clicking on the flag of the language you prefer. The Flash-intro shows in a quick overview what kind of information people can find on our site.

The instructional content of Enlightened is divided into four main sections: Spectrum, Behavior, Properties and Nature. In the spectrum-section people can learn more about the electromagnetic spectrum, made clear with a lot of images. The behavior of light contains some Java-applets, where the user can find out for himself what happens if the conditions change. In the nature-section are some subjects about light in nature described, like the sun, lightning and the appearance of a rainbow. The page about lightning contains a video, which is in the Microsoft Media-player-format (ASF).

Beside these four main sections, there are two others: Interactive and About. The interactive-section contains a classroom, where you can read a lot of facts about light and where you can play a game and a quiz. The quiz-highscores are being saved and can be viewed. In the game in the classroom you have to turn all lights on. This is more difficult as it looks. The other elements in interactive are a puzzle and a word search game. To complete the puzzle you have to slide all pieces to its former place. In the word search you have to find all words which are hided in the letters. The classroom is made with CGI, the games with Java. We used this technologies to let the user interact with the subject.

In the About-section you can find information about ThinkQuest, about the team, about the site, our credits and can you contact us.

Each section has got its own background color and topic image, to make clear in which section you are at the moment.

There are two ways to navigate our site: The first one is the most important. It is the navigation menu, which is normally at the top of every page and it scrolls with you so it is always at the top of your screen. You can change the position of the navigation menu, it is possible to set it to the bottom or change the alignment of the buttons. The settings are stored in a cookie so your settings will be "remembered". The second way to navigate through our site is by using the Sitemap. This is the black button which is on the left bottom of every page. This was created for users with less advanced browsers, which cannot use the menu.
