| (lived during the 11th century)- an Ancient-Greek- Egyptian scientist. He created the so called geocentric system, according to which the Earth stays motionless in the center of the world and all celestial bodies move around it. In his main work “Almagest” he summarized all of the knowledge of the ancient world. His ideas had authority till the middle of the 16th century, when Nikolai Kopernik created the heliocentric system of the world. Ptolomei succeeded to uncover the laws of the visible motions of the celestial bodies to such an extend that it became possible to calculate beforehand their positions. He worked out and systemized the rectilinear and spherical trigonometry, calculated the table of the cines, described 1022 stars. He is also the author of the book “Geography”. |
