Mr. Tan was only 5 years old when he experienced the war. He lived in Kampongs ( village ) with his family. In his Kampong, there lived a traitor who worked for the Japanese and betrayed his own people. The traitor brought some Japanese officers to the Kampong to massacre some of the Chinese. As the traitor's relative lived in that area, the Japanese officers did not start a massacre. He got into his car with the traitor and went to another Kampong. In the other Kampong, people were killed and the Japanese officers set their houses on fire. The Japanese left nothing for the people but sadness and the people became homeless. Mr. Tan had to walk to school, there was no transport for them. For their meals, they only had porridge and sweet potatoes. When they were too hungry and there was no food for them, they had no choice but to eat grass. The war was really an unforgettable experience for Mr Tan. I am sure he would never forget the sufferings he had gone through. |
