The Blue Gum is an aromatic tree. It can commonly grow up to 150-180 feet tall and a trunk diameter of 4-7 feet. Its trunk is straight up to two-thirds of its height. It crown is well developed. The bark is light, yellow-brown in color and is deciduous.

The leaves are narrow and curved and hang downwards. The leaves are dark green, thick and leathery. Leaves of young shoot are ovate, sessile and horizontal. They are covered with a grey, waxy bloom that is thicker on the underside.

The flowers are white and solitary found on flattened stalks. The flowers are 4-5-5cm wide. The sepals and petals are united to form a lid that is present on the bud and drops off at anthesis. It had many stamens. Flowers are most abundant from December to May.

The fruit is a hard woody capsule, shaped like a top. It is 2-2.5cm across. There are numerous seeds each about 2 x 1 mm. The seeds are dark brown with brownish red chaff.
