Vincent goes for work to the art trade Goupil in Den Haag (The Hague).

At the age of 16, Vincent is apprenticed to Goupil & Cie., international art dealers from Paris with a branch established in The Hague, in Belgium. His uncle Vincent, after whom he was named, was a partner in the firm. While working here, Vincent makes frequent visits to the museums of The Hague. His knowledge of art increases during this time and he has a greater appreciation of the styles and techniques of artists like Jean-Francois Millet, Israels and Antoine Mauve, who later married his cousin Jet Carbentus in 1870. Theo later worked for the same firm.
