PAWNEE

The Pawnees (it derives from "Periki", that means "crown", probably because they used to shorten hair in coils to form of crown hardened with fat; they are called "Men's Men") they are a confederation of tribe of Indians of America, belonging to the group linguistic Caddo, once appropriated near Platte River in the today's State of Nebraska. They were semisedentari, hunters of buffalos and growers of corn. They lived in the huts of earth. Their principal divinity was Tirawa Atius, the Creator, that "it threw down from the sky to the human beings everything this of which they had need". they were hereditary custodians, they preserved their sacred knapsacks and they had secret society that were in relationship with the spirits of the supernatural animals. The Pawnees, that once amounted to 25.000 individuals perdettero, between 1840 and 1850, half their population subsequently to an epidemic of cholera, because of the contact with the white farmers that were directed to the west crossing the Footstep of the Platte River. At the end of the century their number went down to few centinaies of individuals. Although many Pawnees had served the army of the United States faithfully as explorers during the Indian wars, you/they had moved to some reserves, but they were united to the Cheyennes and they were rebelled. You/they were tamed and in 1876 confined in the reserves of the Oklahoma, where they were established with the Poncas and the Otos.
