Giant Anteater (Myrmecophagidae tridactyla)

The giant anteater is a toothless mammal. It feeds on ants, and it takes an especial preference to leaf cutter ants. Its head is small, long and pronounced snout. White and black stripes cover most of the body, from the throat to the back. Its body is covered by coarse grey hairs.

The giant anteater first detects the ant nests underground with its highly sensitive nose. Once located, it will rip the nest open with its claws and pass its long and sticky tongue of up to 60cm in and out of the nest, bringing ants into its mouth every time. In order to protect its claws from damage during usual days, it walks on its sides.
