BRABANT FIGHTS AGAINST WATER
Brouwersdam

The Brouwersdam
A
year after the successfully closure of the Haringvliet. they started with
a new challenge the closure of the Brouwershavense Gat.
The
closure of the Brouwershavense Gat starts officially in 1962.
As
usual they build first a construction dock. On this occasion the construction
dock was situated near Den-Osse and West-Repart.
After the construction dock was completed the works started on the construction
of the barrier. When the barrier was ready on the sandbanks they started the
dumping sand in opening between the two banks.
The
only opening then consisted of two channels with a total length of 1,5 kilometre.
To close these two remaining channels they chose the open caisson method. In
this way the two channels were closed one by one.
For
the first channel [ Springersdiep ] the use of the open caissons method
was performed. Open caissons are caissons, which are lowered-scuttled, and via
the openings the tides can pass. This facilitates the easy construction of the
barrier.
The
last caissons settled on the foundation on the first of May 1971.

Not
every one is happy with the closure of the Brouwershavense Gat.
For
the second channel [ the real Brouwershavense Gat ] they chose for the cable car
method. After the blocks reached sufficient height above the sea level the gates
in the open caissons were closed and finally the caissons itself filled up with
sand.

The
construction of this delta work was performed by cable cars.
And finally in 1971 the Brouwersdam is ready!!!!
