To protect the Netherlands against a water surge such as the water surge of 1953 they couldn't make the dikes only higher but they had to build he delta works also. Why the Netherlands decide to build the delta works you can read in our summary.

After the disaster of 1955 everybody agree, this can't be happened again. But the question is how to prevent this ?

Water surge of 1953

The foreigner relief worker with help the Netherlands, give their answer very quick. They told that Nederland gives Zeeland back to the sea. But they didn't hear of the Zeeuwse saying: "Luctor Emergo'' and from the lion witch is wrestle but comes up.

Give land back to the sea??? Never!!!! is the answer of the government.

The Dutch people closed at once al the holes in the dikes  and were necessary, they make them higher and stronger. In the mean of time the government s thinking of a solution for a catastrophe next time. A committee is raise to inquiry for the best prevent of Holland.

So they consider the delta plan. The delta plan makes the safety of people number one !!! Than the land and property.  To protect the land have all the entrance lock with a long dike named the flood barrier  ( one is still open)

Closing of the Veerse gat.

They also build the afsluitdijk this is a dike which is from the North  Holland till Friesland. This dike is 32km long and takes many years work.
