The water reservoirs

Until 1960 the drink water for southwest Holland came from the river the Rijn. But because the water was too polluted it was hard trying to get the water clean enough to drink.

So the government went for searching for alternatives. Cleaning of the water through the dunes was not a good solution.

The Maas seemed to be the only solution. But the Maas is a rain river so in dry summers the river gives less water and in those same summers the demand for water is high. The solution was water reservoirs.

In total 3 water reservoirs were made. The water reservoirs have a kind of water reserve for when the water is too polluted or when the river does not have enough water for everyone.

The water reservoir looks like a very big lake.

One of the good things about the water reservoirs is that the water can´t freeze since it is always moving and that is ideal for birds who can now hibernate.

Total surface of the 3 water reservoirs is 673 Ha.

-The 3 water reservoirs in total contain 78500000m3 of water.

-Minimum: 6 meters deep.

-Maximum: 20 meters deep.
