Finding the
last century's heroes was harder than we expected. For many hundreds and
thousands of years, our heroes have been clearly defined for us. During
the time of the Ancient Greeks, the archetypal hero was created. Courageous
men, strong and brave in the face of danger, were the heroes of that society,
while women played an inferior role never able to aspire to be someone's
hero. Now things have changed, as we realise that killing lions with our
bare hands isn't as common as it needs to be to fill our dreams. Now,
thanks to the shift in the way society thinks about heroic acts, a metamorphosis
of the term hero has come about.
Due to many
of the social complexities which have ruled over our societies at particular
times in history, both social and historical conditions, we have had our
heroes clearly defined for us. But when we dig deeper now at the beginning
of a new millennium, we find many people in our recent history that aren't
as celebrated as they deserve to be. They have remained hidden: thanks
to the social norms they confronted and tore down in their time.
We find here
a collection of people that maybe aren't rich and famous, who will be
names you know and some you don't. On this site you will find short biographies
on all of the people we deem to be heroes. You will come to realise through
reading these that while they accept the challenge that life throws them,
they are normal people like you and me, but who aspired to greatness.
