Young children enjoy being able to imitate their heroes.

Now in the 21st Century, it is about time we reflected on those that came before us, those who structured the last century of the world's history. Within the virtual boundaries of this web site, are a number of stories about the lives of many outstanding people from around the globe. These people have achieved in a range of fields. We now challenge you to follow their lead, and make your mark on the next hundred years.

Many people have done great things in the last hundred years, making selection for a site such as this very difficult. We took this challenge on thinking that the definition of a hero was clean cut; but we soon found the meaning of the term hero to be quite a grey area. Centuries had lapsed since our heroes were clearly cut out from the rest of the world's community. We had to redefine the term. This turned out to be one of the hardest parts of the task.

Guidelines for our selection criteria were designed to envelop everyone from the late 1900's right up to 2000, but this is the only characteristic of a hero that we could all agree on. It soon became clear that each of us had our own idea of what a hero is. Once you join us in adding your ideas, the concept will expand even more.

Heroism in Action Welcomes You

On starry nights their shadow are cast,
Mythic heroes from the past.
For Centuries we'd look up and stare
Wondering how they got stuck up there.

They were the heroes from yesterday,
The strong, the brave, they kept fear at bay.
Yet, only at night they glimmer and shine,
Archetypal heroes created during an ancient time.

As the approaching dawn sheds new light,
Sunlit paths, both brilliant and bright.
Within these shining sunny rays we see,
Heroes are really people, like you and like me.

They aspire to greatness and leave their mark,
Leading humanity out of the dark.
Making a difference, they make the world a better place,
Fighting for rights pertinent to the human race.

Freedom from torture, slavery, and oppression,
Freedom of thought, opinion and expression.
The rights to life, liberty, security and more,
These are what our heroes fight for.

We applaud their achievements, talent and what they do,
Setting and achieving goals like me and like you.
Now we challenge you to follow their lead,
And leave your mark and remember what you read.
Hopefully, you'll leave this site with a favorable reaction,
And demonstrate what we call, "Heroism in Action."
