"Having
a big heart has nothing to do with how big your bank account is. Everyone
has something to give." -Barbara
Bush
The results
of a national study found that effective programs can improve student's
academics, school attendance and evoke a greater personal and social responsibility.
By learning in the classroom and reaching out to the community students
improve critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving, communication, research
and computer skills. Besides, what greater reward is there than knowing
that you have not only improved your life but have made a difference in
the lives of others? Making a difference is what being a hero is all about!!!
However, it is only human to want some personal benefit out of Service-Learning.
What are you going to get out of it? Well, some people believe that volunteers
should not "benefit" from helping others. Then look as the whole
experience as an exchange! You are not only improving lives but are improving
your own life as well. Every effort you make has impact! Benefits include:
- Education
- Students
can have a "real world" experience
- Get to
know and help your community
- Promotes
and teaches positive values
- Teaches
many skills including: leadership, citizenship and social relations
with others
- Make an
impact
- Be looked
up to as a role model
- Prepares
students for future careers
- Encourages
teachers to be creative and innovative
- Contributes
to outreach efforts
- Helps
people in need
- Encourages
collaboration and positive relations
- Adds to
your resume
- Makes
you feel good
- Earn
scholarship money
- increases
campus collaboration
