Peter Garrett is one of the people we have listed as a hero in our database. His work to promote land rights, reconciliation with Australian aborigines and his efforts to highlight the importance of the environment over the years have been recognised in a number of ways. Many of us know Peter Garrett as an accomplished musician and a member of the band, Midnight Oil. The music of the band has a cult following amongst all ages, thanks to its politically attuned lyrics and thier rocky/alternative/indy tunes.

US: Thankyou Peter for giving us your time. Your answers will be very valuable to us. Well let 's get into it. What qualities do you believe, must a person have to "qualify" to be a hero?

Peter: A core set of values which include thinking about and doing things for others; self belief without boasting; the capacity to accept setbacks without giving; in and a sense of humility.

US: What is the most satisfying thing you have done in your life that has in some way contributed to society?

Peter: Helping to raise people's awareness that the natural world is our only home to live in and take fair dinkum care of, would be one thing I hope we have achieved.

US: Do you think the definition of hero changes over time? For example, in comparison to an ancient hero who was revered for his ability to kill lions (Hercules) to a modern hero who can play guitar well (Jimi Hendrix)?

Peter: Most so-called heroes of today; film and music stars etc haven't done anything heroic at all so yes the notion has changed. A real hero isn't looking for the camera or the applause.

US: Who is your hero from the 20th Century?

"..raise people's awareness that the natural world is our only home to live in and take fair dinkum care of.." Peter Garrett

Peter: I don't have one particular hero, but admire lots of people who have worked for their community against the odds.

US: Do you consider Vincent Lingiari and Eddie Mabo to be modern day Australian heroes?

Peter: Yes, Lingiari and Mabo were both outstanding people who challenged the powers of the day and tried to get justice for their people and could be considered heroes.

US: What do you think their actions can teach us?

Peter: You have to hang in despite the odds and believe that there is a better day ahead, and that it can be reached if you don't give in.

US: What advice would you give to the next generation of aspiring heroes?

Peter: Turn off the telly for a while and discover your inner voice, then listen to it.

US: Thankyou very much Peter.

Peter: Ok good luck
