Comments: Mrs Berry, One of the things I think children often find hard to grasp at that age is that people in books seem so distant. I don’t know Sacramento, but I figure there are probably many people in your own area who have done things that are “brave”. Getting someone in to talk to them can help them understand that they can be heroes themselves – as well as showing them that real life heroes are real life people. Try your local council – (is it called city hall in the USA?). All the best.

Comments: I am a 2nd grade teacher and we are currently teaching a unit on Being Brave. One of the assignments is for the students to write a biography about their favorite heros. I am reading them stories about Sally Ride, AMelia Earhart, Pocahantas, Sacajawea, Martin L. King, Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, etc. but would appreciate any suggestions people may have to enhanse this unit.

Favourite Hero: Cathy Freeman
Comments: As you say, a true hero is more than simply someone who is good at sport. While Cathy is a great runner, I think her selection to light the Olympic flame during the opening ceremony in Sydney was the result of lots more. Cathy has reached this point while overcoming many obstacles along the way. She has also used her position to stand up for aboriginal rights and recognition in this country. The olympic spirit for many does bring out the hero in us all.

Comments: Frequently students mistake heroes with TV icons. In this day and age, many children have Madonna and Beavis and Butthead as thier heroes. I am so glad that you defined, What is a hero? Great Website.
