Why write a letter? It can let others know your opinion on issues and can help to bring about change.

Newspapers
Sending a letter to a newspaper will let others know what you think of an issue. Generally the editor decides which letters to print so it is a good idea to address your letters to the editor. When a lot of people write letters on similar issues to local papers, the debate can expand even further. It can even stir others into action when they see they aren't the only people who feel that way.

Politicians
Letters can also be sent to politicians. These are the people in a democracy who will vote on issues to decide if they will become law or not. Political representatives have been elected to represent the ideas of the majority of the population. It is therefore important that you let politicians know what you think about issues. If you are not yet old enough to vote, remember - you will be soon.
