THE HARD LIFE IN THE FIELD
ome habitants of the town, that work in the land, own the field they coltivate. But they have the profits with the landlords. Other people, instead, only cultivate their lord's land, receiving a regular salary. The principal crop is the wheat, followed by other cereals (as oat and barley). The serfs sow them in late autumn, taking handfuls of seed from the bag they wear around the neck, and scatter them regularly. When the cereals are ripened, they are reaped in big haycocks with the sickles. Then they are threshed to separate the corn from the husk. The remained stubble is used as food for cattle. Anyway, besides doing their work, all the serfs have to carry out some activities for the lord of the castle, for example, the wine growing, that keeps them very busy all the year round. Moreover they have to harvest grapes in Autumn. Besides, every serf has to pay a tribute to the priest of the town, giving him a tenth of their harvest, and there is a milling tax, too. |
