FORTIFICATION:
WALLS AND ACCESSES

he main medieval towns are surrounded by thick walls.
Accesses, also to the sea, are defended by many sentry posts. In case of danger accesses are patrolled, day and night, by soldiers and controls increase too.
Now we are at the main gate of the town and we, too, can't avoid controls.
Any person or any sort of goods that have to enter the town, is checked and searched from top to bottom, including all personal belongings. Often sentinels, too curious, abuse of their power, searching carts and baskets, asking embarrassing questions. In short, poking their nose into other people's business!!
Sentinels do not live only on their meagre salary, so it often happens that merchants going to market bribe them with a pint of beer or a silver coin.
We should not be surprised if an arrow hits an unwelcome guest on his neck.
We really hope we have got the right faces!!
