THE CHURCH AND GOD

I

n the Middle Ages people are very godly and nobody believes they can overcome life's difficulties and perils without God's help.
To show their faith, people set off on long pilgrimages. The Christians' principal destinations are Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Campostela. These are far away from the starting point, and the pilgrims often have to travel on foot.
Many people dedicate their life to the Church completely, they become monks and nuns, and live in convents, monasteries, abbeys, where they prey, copy out books or look after sick people.
Another important medieval personality is the relic seller. He sells a lot of goods (objects, he says, which belonged to saints, or even, crosses done with Christ's cross wood), requiring customers to entrust him with their money.
Thanks to people's great devotion, priests and churchmen have become very important, and some of them neglect their duty and love for luxury and politics.
