Napster and the RIAA
Whether or not you're aware of it, a monumental battle over the music you listen to and the way you hear it is raging. On one side is the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the trade group that represents the music industry, and recording artists Metallica and Dr. Dre. On the other is Napster, a free software program that turns your hard drive into a Web server and lets you download free MP3 files from other Napster users. The RIAA, along with Metallica and Dre, have sued Napster for copyright infringement and racketeering. Napster is fighting back, using the Digital Millennium Copyright Act as defense. Visit the RIAA’s website at http://www.riaa.com and download Napster at http://www.napster.com.
