When young ladies and men gather together, hand in hand, to form a circle around a band of musicians that accompany the setting of the sun, they sing and dance happily to welcome the night sky of beautiful Mexico. In spite of chaperons, promises of love are whispered back and forth between the innocent children. Music in the Mexican culture is not only a source of pleasure, but it also plays an important role in religious and magical rites. It is the language in their life. For example, the medicine men sing to cure and for other magical rites while hunters and fishermen sing for luck. All the people, men, woman, and children alike, are always singing; they have songs of love, the sun, moon, and the stars. They all sing shared songs but many sing their own personal ones, which they themselves have invented and no one else sings. They all sing and play with great pride, feeling, expressing delicacy and pathos with tears in their eyes.

Your Remarks:
Annette -- Netters83@yahoo.com -- Friday, February 13 2004, 01:22 pm I'm an American student currently studying abroad in Mexico and I can tell you that your desciption of music in Mexico is not only trite, but also demonstrates a very uninformed picture of what Mexico is today.
