MI: LIBRARY: INSTRUMENTS: STRINGS: ACOUSTIC GUITARS History Perhaps one of the most common acoustic guitar is the classical guitar. The classical guitar’s ancestor was the gittern from medieval times. Around the 1400’s, the gittern developed into an instrument which resembled a downsized version of the modern classical guitar,. This instrument first appeared in Spain and Italy. The classical guitar has changed very little since. Description Acoustic Guitar Variations Resonator guitar: This guitar is an acoustic guitar with aluminum plates in its body. These plates help boost the sound making it playable at a concert without an amplifier. It came out of the mid-west and west-coast during the 20’s and 30’s. Twelve-string guitar: This acoustic guitar features twice as many strings as a regular acoustic. Aside from making it a louder instrument, it gives the musician two strings for each pitch. With the twelve strings, the guitar sounds almost as though two musicians are performing at once. Torres guitar: Torres guitars are considered the “forerunners” of the modern accoustic guitar. They have a slightly-larger body, and aside from that are very similar to a classical guitar.
