MI: LIBRARY: INSTRUMENTS: PERCUSSION

Percussion instruments can be divided into two categories. Rhythmic and Melodic.

Rhythmic Percussion instruments do not play melodies. They complement other melodies by serving as a beat and rhythm to the piece. They include drums sets, timpani, cymbal, and many other common instruments.

Melodic Percussion instruments can and often do play melodies. They may be xylophones, chimes, Jew's harps, or any other percussion instrument with the ability to play a melody. Although they often don't have the abilities of non-percussion soloists, they can play beautiful solos.
