MI: LIBRARY: INSTRUMENTS: BRASS: TUBA

History
Tubas originated from Germany and Austria around the 1820’s. The first tuba appeared in Berlin. By the end of that century, tubas were commonly found in orchestras and bands everywhere. Today, tubas are found in a collection of various sizes and shapes.

Description
Tubas are very low instruments, they’re the bass members of the brass family. It is this fact which gives them very few solos because they are difficult to hear. Regardless, tubas play an important part in music and when they do get the seldom solo, it is usually spectacular.

Tuba Variations
Euphonium: This instrument is also known as the baritone and is made of brass. It is considered a “tenor-tuba”. This instrument will often have more solos in classical music due to its “velvety” voice.

Sousaphone: Obviously, this was named after John Phillip Sousa. The musician actually “wears the instrument, he/she stands inside it to play. It is very large and a bass tuba, commonly found in various bands.

My textbook for my class in brass instruments (The Teaching of Instrumental Music, by Colwell & Goolsby) stresses that the baritone and euphonium are indeed different instruments.

Yes, the baritone and euphonium are different instruments. Most people play euphoniums. Also, I have heard the euphonium called the "alto-tuba."

Is the Euphonium/Tenor Tuba in the USA same as that from Europe? Are they B-flat instruments that are transposing, or do they play concert pitch as the Trombones do?
