BRASS
The family of
brass instruments is alike in the way in which the sound is created. Each
brass horn required the musician to create the vibration which causes the
sound. The players lips vibrate against a mouthpiece to produce these
sounds. This initial sound is then carried through the (usually) brass
tubing and magnified in the bell. Included in this family of
instrumentation are the cornet, french
horn, trombone, trumpet
and tuba.
They
are all unique in the way that brass instruments can manipulate the sounds that
pass through them. This is done in most cases by valves or tubing that can
be lengthened, shortened or redirect the path of the airway. These
variations are achieved by sliding the tubing apart or by depressing valves to
direct which tubing the air will flow through.
