Eye, light-sensitive organ of vision in animals. The most precious gift of God given to the mankind. Eye infact is the only natural camera in the whole world. The structure of the eye is extraordinary in that living tissues are endowed with transparency and accurate optics so that clear images can be formed on the light-sensitive retina. Good vision depends on the clarity of the ocular media (cornea, aqueous humour, crystalline lens and vitreous body). They must maintain an accurate anatomical relationship with the retina.

Most ocular tissues have little or no regenerative properties. Defence mechanisms, which are an advantage in the healing of other tissues and organs, can have a seriously adverse effect on the eye. It may be necessary to suppress them.

The intraocular pressure is kept within physiological limits by a complex mechanism of aqueous circulation. This is easily disturbed, either temporarily or permanently, by trauma. Injuries to the uveal tissues (iris, ciliary body and choroid) can induce in them an inflammation (uveitis) which can excite a similar destructive inflammation in the uvea of the uninjured eye (sympathetic ophthalmitis). Thus an injury to one eye can result in total blindness.

Blindness is the world's major human disability. According to the World Health Organization, between 41 and 52 million people are blind or visually impaired. As many as 90 per cent of them live in developing countries, and approximately 80 per cent are blind from diseases which are either curable or preventable. These statistics portray a needless tragedy of millions of human beings trapped in their lonely world of darkness.

The eyes of various species vary from simple structures that are capable only of differentiating between light and dark to complex organs, such as those of humans and other mammals, that can distinguish minute variations of shape, color, brightness, and distance. The actual process of seeing is performed by the brain rather than by the eye. The function of the eye is to translate the electromagnetic vibrations of light into patterns of nerve impulses that are transmitted to the brain.
