Amblyopia
|
The treatment for amblyopia depends on the underlying problem. In some cases,
the strong eye is temporarily patched so the child is forced to use the weaker
eye. For children with problems relating to a refractive error, glasses may be
necessary to correct vision. Problems that impair vision such as cataracts or
droopy eyelids often require surgery. Regardless of the treatment required, it
is of utmost importance that intervention is implemented as early as possible
before the child’s brain learns to permanently suppress or ignore the eye.

Diabetic Retinopathy
|
Effective treatment is available and loss of vision is preventable
in the vast majority of cases. For those that do develop retinopathy effective
treatment is available. Laser surgery, usually done in your doctor’s office, is
used to seal leaky blood vessels or prevent growth of new vessels. Scar tissue
causing retinal detachment or hemorrhage which does not clear spontaneously may
require outpatient surgery.
Prevention
It has been clearly demonstrated that well-controlled diabetics have less
retinal complications than those who are poorly controlled do. Weight loss,
exercise and diet also play an important role. With early diagnosis and prompt
treatment good vision can be maintained in most cases. Unfortunately, many
diabetic patients do not seek treatment until loss of vision has occurred at
which time the retinopathy is usually advanced. All diabetics should have yearly
eye exams prior to the detection of retinopathy. If retinopathy develops more
frequent follow-up is required.

Hyperopia
|
The treatment for hyperopia depends on several factors such as the patient’s
age, activities, and occupation. Young patients may or may not require glasses
or contact lenses, depending on their ability to compensate for their
farsightedness with accommodation. Glasses or contact lenses are required for
older patients.
Refractive surgery is an option for adults who wish to see clearly without
glasses. LASIK, clear lens replacement, LTK and intraocular contact lenses are
all procedures that can be performed to correct hyperopia.

Keratoconus
|
Because of the irregular corneal shape, vision is usually not correctable to the
patient’s best potential acuity with glasses. Often, a gas permeable contact
lens may be helpful to those with mild to moderate keratoconus because it
simulates a smooth, regular, corneal surface.
When a patient is unable to tolerate contact lenses, either because of comfort
or poor visual acuity, a corneal transplant may be necessary to help obtain
functional vision.

ARMD
|
There is no proven medical therapy for dry macular degeneration. In selected
cases of wet macular degeneration, laser photocoagulation is effective for
sealing leaking or bleeding vessels. Unfortunately, laser photocoagulation
usually does not restore lost vision, but it may prevent further loss. Early
diagnosis is critical for successful treatment of wet macular degeneration.
Patients can help the doctor detect early changes by monitoring vision at home
with an Amsler grid.
Nutrition and macular degeneration
Several recent studies have indicated a strong link between nutrition and the
development of macular degeneration. It has been scientifically demonstrated
that people with diets high in fruits and vegetables (especially leafy green
vegetables) have a lower incidence of macular degeneration. More studies are
needed to determine if nutritional supplements can prevent progression in
patients with existing disease.

Presbyopia
|
The treatment for presbyopia is very simple, but is entirely dependent on the
individual’s age, lifestyle, occupation, and hobbies. If the patient has good
distance vision and only has difficulty seeing up close, reading glasses are
usually the easiest solution. For others, bifocals (glasses with reading and
distance correction) or separate pairs of reading and distance glasses are
necessary. Another option is monovision: adjusting one eye for distance
vision, and the fellow eye for reading vision. This can be done with contact
lenses or permanently with refractive surgery.

Retinal Detachment
|
If treatment is necessary, there are a variety of ways that the surgeon can
treat a retinal detachment. More than 90% of retinal detachments can be re-
attached. Occasionally more than one surgery is needed. The amount of vision
that returns after treatment usually depends on how long the retina was detached
or if there is fibrous growth on the retina. The majority of patients with a
surgically treated retinal detachment assume useful vision post-operatively.
