Shadows refer to a dark region that is formed when light is being blocked out by an opaque object. In general, shadows have 2 regions - The umbra and the penumbra

The umbra is the darker contre part where the object casting the shadow blocks out all the light rays coming from the light source The penumbra is thus, the outer part of the shadow.

As such, only some of the light rays reach the penumbra and results in a less dark area than the umbra.
