Introduction ...

Rainbows, mirrors, and holograms are manifestations of the properties of light. Optics, the study of light, is a diverse field of science concerned with how light is produced and transmitted and how it interacts with matter. Here, you will understand more about the various types of lenses and their uses. Next, you will discover why we fondly refer the eye to as the 'miracle lens'. Have fun !

Lenses - A brief explanation

A lens is a device for forming an image of an object by refraction or bending of light.

In its simplest form it is basically a disk made of a transparent substance, usually glass or plastic, with its two surfaces curved or with one surface plane and the other curved.

Generally each curved surface(convex) if it curves outward , and concave if curves inward of a lens and it is made such as it is a portion of a spherical surface. The center of the sphere is called the center of curvature(C) of the surface.

All rays of light passing through a lens are refracted other than those that passes directly through a point called the optical centre. We will probe into the parts of a lens later.

There are basically 2 types of lenses : Convex and Concave lenses. Each of them have their own functions.
