Fischer was known as a great tournament player. During the US-championships he played 11 games and won 11 games, that is a record! After an argument at the (Interzonenturnier) he retired to play chess tournaments until 1970. In 1972 he won the world master title against the Russian Boris Spasskyi. But in 1975 he did not defend his title against Anatoli Karpov. He lost by default.

Until the 90s, Fischer lived in seclusion. Then in 1992, He held a show match against Boris Spasski. In doing so, Fischer disregarded an international boycott against Yugoslavia, where the match was held. Fischer clearly won and again he withdrew from tournament chess.
