SUB PLOT

"I'll always go back to that church."

In this film, Kip is a Sikh Lieutenant. With his Sergeant Hardy, they exlpore and terminate mines, using saucer-like metal detectors and headsets everyday. Kip and Hana first meet when Kip and Hardy were exploring the road ahead of the becalmed convoy. Kip is absolutely focused as they inch along the debris-strewn road. He stiffens as he registers metal. Just when he is carefully scraping at the mud-caked surface, Hana walks across him. She is a nurse who stays in the army and takes care of casualities. Kip and Hardy was stunned at that moment and they shout for Hana to stop as they were afraid that there be mines infront. Hana was totally out of control of herself at that time because she had just lost her good friend, Jan, who died when a mine exploded on the jeep she was on.

They meet each other again when Hana plays a piano in the library downstairs. A gunshot punctuates the music. It is Kip, running towards the library. He stops Hana from playing the piano because there were mines everywhere which was left by the Germans during the war. As expected, Kip found some wires from the wall to the piano onto which taped an explosive charge. Becaused Kip has saved Hana's life and her mother always said that her husband would be summoned by her piano music, Hana beomes quite attracted to him. Hana treats Kip very warmly, she even gave Kip a bottle of olive oil for bathing. They formed a close relationship very quickly.

However, after Kip's buddy Hardy gets killed by a bomb, that night, Kip realises that they shouldn't have fallen in love in the first place. He knows the danger of his job, that he could be killed anytime. Thus he decided not to let Hana suffer with him. After Kip gets another assignment elsewhere, Hana says that she will always go back to that church to look at the paintings. Kip too expresses the same thoughts. Hana then reveals her wish to meet Kip one day there. So the two lovers leave, knowing that they may not ever see each other again.

Apart from Hana and Kip, another interesting character is Caravaggio. He once tried to kill the English Patient by lying to Hana that he is a thief and wants to do some work in the library because there are Partisans to be disalarmed, he wants to investigate them and see if they can relieve them of their weapons.

Caravaggio was once a Canadian spy who works for the allies. His thumbs were cut off in Tobruk when he was caught by an officer when he was trying to escape. He was tortured by his interrogator, Muller. Caravaggio's thumbs were cut off by a young muslim nurse who was ordered by Muller. Muller did it because Caravaggio did not reveal his accomplices to Muller. However it is ironic because he did not know anything.

In the end, he decides not to kill The English Patient, because he now understands why he did it and that it was not for self interests which causes him to betray the British.
