By looking beyond the focus you may be able to find the date of when the photo was taken. You may be able to identify an heirloom that you own now. Wouldn't it give that heirloom a richer meaning if you found photos of your great great grandparents with the same piece? You would have to zoom in and look closely if that piece happened to be a small piece of jewelry or a military medal. You may be able to tell if the person in your photo was married by looking to see if they were wearing a wedding ring. Some older photos mirrored the image taken and in this case a wedding ring would appear to be on the wrong hand. You may be able to find clues about the way things really were when the photo was taken.

Gift giving or any celebration photos are always fun to zoom into. What ornaments, decorations, or cards did your family display? Take a close look at what Saint Nick left in the year 1924 with the virtual magnifying glass by clicking on the title below. When you close the java window you will still be here.

When the person who would know the clues to your past is no longer with you, the wonderful people who helped make your very early childhood magical could be left unknown to you. Read the story covering the steps Charanna took to find out who her Santa Claus had been.

Not all things beyond the focus are in the photo. People have been known to slip news clippings, letters, and special memories behind a photo within its album or frame. Below are two tin plate Civil War photographs. Behind one of them and under the case liner there are two small locks of hair. It was common for soldiers to take to war a lock of their sweetheart's hair. For this soldier it was locks from two sweethearts. One lock is very blond while the other is strawberry blond.

Caution! Removing photos from their frames, cases, or albums can destroy the photograph. It is always recommended to leave the removing to a specialist. We did not remove this photograph from its case. The locks of hair were discovered when the case broke many years ago.
