Chapter 8 Chemical Reactions

You will find that you will need to be able to change a statement written in English into an equation. The symbolism in chemistry is like a form of shorthand. You know the symbols for many of the most common elements, and you have been shown how to balance the equations using coefficients (section 4.2). Now you will write chemical reactions using chemical formulas.

The reaction is always written with the reactants (the substances that the reaction begins with) on the left side of the arrow and the products (the new chemicals produced) on the right side of the arrow.

Chapter 8 Exercises

The equations that you work with will fall into one of four categories. If you learn these categories and examples, you will have most of the knowledge required to balance many equations. It is very important to be able to do this because most chemistry problems require a balanced equation to even begin solveing the problem. The four main types of reactions are listed below:

composition or synthesis reaction

decompostion reaction

single displacement reaction

double displacement reaction

In the next two sections, we will further discuss these reactions and how to write the reactions from a given text description.
