Introduction:
When comets, asteroids, and our planet
earth are put into the same sentence, people often ask questions. Questions
like:
1. Can comets/asteroids destroy earth? 2. Is there one course with earth? 3. When will it arrive?
| Scientists seem to have found recordings of a large comet about a few kilometers wide, traveling at a speed of 17, 000 miles per hour. This was what wiped the dinosaurs clean off the earth and killed 75 percent of the Earth's species over 60 million years ago. The comet devastated the planet by creating waves over 100 feet high, a huge crater about 50 miles in diameter, and a planet indulged by dust and a ashes from the impact and explosion. Cutting off all forms of light and heat the planet froze over until the dust settled and cleared. | ![]() |
| Now say an asteroid the size of our moon traveling at the speed of 17,000 mph, or even a little bit faster, should ram head on into the earth. What do you think would happen? Well in three words. "HELL ON EARTH". Seat belts and air bags won't help, sorry to say. What we think is that upon impact the asteroid would pierce the surface of the earth cracking it into pieces, while the explosion would create mega-tsunamis and extremely strong winds. Upon explosion an impact the ruins of the earth would be steered of orbital course while the core gushes out onto the surface and into space as we all sail to the sun. Doesn't that make you feel tingly all over. Huh?? | ![]() |
| Are disasters of such nature near to impossible? Who can imagine the planet being blown to pieces. Hypothesis state that a comet or asteroid should pierce our atmosphere and impact every 2 million years or so. So when will the next one come? Well some have predicted that it will come in a few years to a few hundred years but we won't know until its here. Take for instance the shoemaker on Jupiter. In 1994 between 16th and 24th of July, there were massive shower of comets on Jupiter. Now looking at the space of how big our solar system is, even out galaxy and there are showers this close. Every year comets come close to the earth and stats say that out of about 500,000 to 5 million of those comets one will hit earth. |

Conclusion:
In conclusion,
said by some that a comet comes around every 1 or 2 million years that
will hit earth. Now we or should In say our over sized lizards have witnessed
a devastating cosmic catastrophe. After all this, there is still one question
left afloat. Will there be an asteroid that will destroy earth as a whole.
The answer to that, we don't know yet. However, In believe there will be
one. Maybe there is one out there heading for us right now. Getting closer
as time goes on. And it will leave this planet in many pieces just floating
around until the next big bang. Hey think about this it could be heading
for your back yard. FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
